Trasylol

Trasylol® (Aprotinin Injection), a drug used during heart surgery to limit blood loss, has been found to greatly increase the risk of kidney damage, heart attack and stroke.

During a heart bypass procedure, physicians often use a drug known as Trasylol to reduce the amount of blood loss by the patient during the surgery; several alternative drug products are available for the same purpose. A January 2006 article in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that Trasylol increases the risk of heart attack 48 percent, heart failure 109 percent, and stroke 181 percent, according to a study among nearly 4,400 patients. This and another study, published in the medical journal Transfusion also indicate a substantially increased risk of kidney dysfunction associated with the use of Trasylol, but not with the alternative drugs. In September 2006, the FDA held an Advisory Committee meeting to review these data, which the advisors found inconclusive. However, following the meeting, the FDA learned that the manufacturer of Trasylol, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, conducted a third study which confirmed the earlier articles, and had not informed the FDA about this additional evidence. As a result, the FDA issued a Health Advisory which alerted doctors and the public to findings indicating that Trasylol is not as safe as the available alternatives.
